About: The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Sydney is the largest and most comprehensive grouping of allied health professions, researchers and teachers within Australia. The faculty is a world leader in health sciences and allied health research and education.

The Discipline of Exercise and Sport Science, known for its work in the application of exercise to health and human performance, is particularly committed to building on its strong academic and research credentials in the areas of exercise, health, and physical activity. This aligns with the significant developments in the University in the areas of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity realised in the establishment of a new Centre for Obesity, Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease of which the faculty is an integral part. The creation of this new centre is a major priority for the institution during the 2011-2015 planning period.

The faculty currently seeks to appoint a highly-motivated Professor (Level E) to make a significant contribution to its research and teaching programs in the area of exercise, health and physical activity. The discipline is responsible for teaching exercise and sports science at baccalaureate level and exercise physiology at baccalaureate and graduate level.

Applicants will have a background of: 1) an outstanding publication record and track record in securing research grants relevant to exercise, health and physical activity 2) a commitment to excellence in university-level education and professional service 3) demonstrated leadership skills and evidence of highly effective interpersonal skills 4) significant experience in recruiting, supervising and supporting postgraduate research students 5) interest and expertise in curriculum development.

A successful record of working collaboratively with clinicians, researchers, the health sector and other external stakeholders is highly desirable.

The successful applicant will work alongside a passionate team of scientists in the various disciplines of exercise and sports science, including physiology and biochemistry, biomechanics and motor behaviour, and health promotion and primary care. The appointee will pursue a research program and teach in the area of exercise, health and physical activity, as well as supervise postgraduate research students and contribute to the discipline’s academic programs. Furthermore, the appointee will be a world-leading researcher who demonstrates a willingness to contribute to administrative duties and to provide significant leadership in linking the faculty and discipline with the University’s initiatives in obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The appointee must hold a PhD in exercise and sport science, movement science, kinesiology, exercise physiology or similar cognate area and a strong background in exercise, health and physical activity. An established research profile demonstrated by a strong publication record and research grant acquisition will be essential, as will experience in university teaching, good communication skills and the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.
