Youth Agricultural Program Assistant
Job Purpose: Coordinates the Poder Juveníl Campesino (PJC) market garden and small farms projects in conjunction with the NCFIELD executive director and PJC youth leaders, trains youth in pesticide-free growing practices, expands market opportunities for the garden, contacts and interacts with the public and community members to facilitate collaborative learning opportunities, resource sharing, and donations, and assists the NCFIELD director in grants to sustain and grow garden program.
Duties: • In charge of organizing youth schedules for work days, harvest days, produce delivery to established buyers, and farmers’ market attendance; • Sets up low and high tunnels in the garden for season extension in fall/winter 2012; • Participates in learning experiences that can be taught to peers; meets with collaborators and organizations as necessary; represents NC FIELD with integrity and professional character at all times; • Assists the executive director with work day coordination, youth recruitment and retention; • Consults with the executive director about program deficits, donations, and grant opportunities; • Keeps parents informed about upcoming opportunities for youth, agricultural project progress and other details; • Provides peer support to youth who struggle to attend or integrate into the program; • Enhances NC FIELD’s reputation by accomplishing new and different projects; explores opportunities to add value to the program.
Skills/Qualifications: Gardening Knowledge (particularly pesticide-free growing practices), Verbal Communication, Resolving Conflict, Presentation Skills, Self-Motivated, Motivating Others, Listening, Collaborative Popular Education Models, Deals with Uncertainty, Objectivity, Confidentiality.
Compensation: For part-time contract employees, 20 hrs/wk at $10/hr. For students receiving college credit, 15-20 hrs/wk with $400/month stipend through December, with possibility for continuation in the 2013 spring semester. Travel is reimbursed from a location 30 miles or less to PJC Garden (15 minutes southwest of Kinston).
