Post-Doc Research Fellowship Position Childhood/Adolescent Obesity Research at the Survey Research Center, University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research.
About: The Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research is seeking a post doctoral research fellow to work on a national study of environmental influences on behaviors associated with overweight among youth. Work would focus on the ongoing national study Youth, Education, and Society (YES), which is in its 14th year of continued funding, and is part of the Bridging the Gap research program sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The social environments under study are American secondary schools.
Data on policies, practices and programs of relevance are collected from nationally representative samples of about 600 middle and high schools annually. Prevalence and trends in these dimensions are reported on an annual basis. For a subset of schools, the data are related to student outcome data on height, weight, exercise, nutrition, sleep, etc. from the large annual Monitoring the Future surveys of 8th, 10th, and 12th graders. The candidate would work with a team of experienced social scientists and epidemiologists on analysis, writing, and instrument revision with opportunities for mentoring.
Qualifications: include a PhD in a related discipline: psychology, sociology, social psychology, epidemiology, economics, public health, policy, nutrition or medicine. Position requires a good knowledge of survey methods, quantitative data analysis techniques, and substantive knowledge of the obesity literature, in particular physical activity and/or nutrition environments. Excellent written communication skills are necessary, as well as an ability to work collaboratively and constructively as a member of a research team. Salary range of $55,000-60,000/yr (USD) plus benefits and travel funds. The initial appointment is one year with the potential of funding for an additional year. We anticipate an early summer start date.
