Job Summary: The Health Educator is a professional who develops implements and evaluates educational programs for community members, partner agencies, professional community audiences and other health providers. The community cancer prevention and awareness educational services will focus efforts in the Ponce School of Medicine and Health Sciences (PSMHS) -Moffitt Cancer Center (MCC) Partnership defined target areas and specifically selected community sites in Tampa, FL and Ponce, Puerto Rico. Effective educational strategies will be utilized with an emphasis on prevention and health promotion. The Health Educator will also coordinate the provision of cancer awareness and preventive health education services in the community and act as a resource person in a capacity building role. Educational materials and other media and communication messages will be developed in a variety of venues, e.g. group and individual teaching modules, displays, radio or television messages, etc. The health education program initiative provides an emphasis on prevention as an effective strategy to improve community health and change health behaviors, e.g. seeking cancer-screening services. Educational activities planned and developed will be consistent with national imperatives relating to the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate education. Travel required to Puerto Rico and Washington, DC. Must be able to travel 30% of the time.

Research Assistantship with Peers for Progress, Chicago, IL

Peers for Progress has available a Research Assistantship in conjunction with its project examining peer support and diabetes management in primary care and community settings. The overall project includes a demonstration project with Alivio Medical Center in Chicago and the development with the National Council of La Raza of a National Peer Support Collaborative Learning Network. Activities of the RA would span across these and include help in coordinating patient surveys, program evaluation, development of materials for the Collaborative Learning Network, preparation of reports and manuscripts (with opportunity for sharing in authorship) and others as may be identified in conjunction with project needs and the RA’s interests. Salary would be on a base of $7,000 (USD) for the semester, with option for tuition assistance depending on the RA’s level of interest and projected involvement in the program. Continued funding after this semester is also available as the project will run through December of 2014.
