Posting/sharing from listserv: Today, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced available funding of $70 million to improve the health of small communities across the nation. Grants will be awarded to governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations across a variety of sectors, including transportation, housing, education, and public health, in an effort to save lives and control the nation’s growing health care costs associated with preventable chronic diseases.

About: Voices into Action: The Families, Food, and Health Project aims to partner with communities to improve access to healthy, affordable food and safe places to be active. We are seeking a part-time research assistant who will help conduct qualitative, sociological interviews with Latina mothers about their experiences feeding their families and their perceptions of food and health. The position is associated with a USDA-funded project on the structural (social, cultural, political, economic, and environmental) factors that contribute to childhood obesity among limited-resource populations.

Doctoral Scholarship: Built Environments and Physical Activity in New Zealand Adolescents

Applications are invited from suitably qualified individuals for a PhD scholarship funded by the Health Research Council of New Zealand. The successful applicant will join an established team of researchers from the Auckland University of Technology (Auckland, New Zealand), Massey University (Auckland New Zealand), the University of Melbourne (Melbourne, Australia), and the University of Otago (Wellington, New Zealand). The student will be based at the Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Auckland University of Technology. The scholarship is valued at NZ $25,000 p.a. (tax exempt) for three years. A tuition fee waiver and partial project expenses may also apply.
